I dont want to refresh my memory of my dad hitting it with a hammer and pieces flying everywhere, lmao. How do I crack it open and not make a huge sticky mess?

Use a knife. And crack it halfway open. Then take to the sink, and put a big, huge bowl underneath of it. Then wedge the knife along the crack, until it pops open. Then all the coconut milk should drain into the big bowl!

Use a hand drill with a brand new, clean blade to make two holes. Drain out the water and then any method you use to open the coconut will be much cleaner.

You can use a screwdriver to jab a hole in one of the eyes to drain the juice. After that you may as well get out the hammer. Maybe you could put it in a plastic bag when you smash it.

I always used a hammer and nail to make a few holes and drain it first, then I used a machete.
