Because it supposedly messes up the communication between the pilot and the airport towers. Of course, there is some airline that is going to allow their customers to use cell phones onboard all of its flights.

Several Reasons:

1. Terrorist and Hijackers may use them to communicate with other Terrorist/Hijackers

2. Even though the chance of a cell phone interfering with Navagation equipment and ATC (Air Traffic Controll) is a 1 out of 1,000 chance, flight crew do not want to take that chance and every month more than 5 phones come out into the public and the chance of a crash is highered.

3. A small airplane crashed a small distence from Zurich on Jan, 10, 2000. The airplane crashed killing all 10 passengers and crew. Nothing was wrong with the aircraft but someone received an SMS text message during a cellphone conversation.

4. REMEMBER!! THE CHANCE OF A PROBLEM IS SMALL BUT DO YOU WANT TO TAKE THE CHANCE?

I saw Myth Busters do that on TV and it was a bust. Not true cell phones do not effect planes it is just so someone can make money on the plane phones where u have to use a credit card.

All that hype about interference is nonsense. It's really so you don't have 400 individual conversations on the plane.

I'm a very frequent flyer and have accidentally left my phone on several times. Nothing happens, as a matter of fact, the phone either doesn't get a signal or goes to roaming.

Optimistic answer: So you don't have a hundred passengers talking on the phone and annoying the other hundred passengers.

Cynical answer: So you have to pay to use the plane's phone if you have to make a call.

If the Myth Busters proved it? Then it must be true.

highjackers and terrorists..... do you want them communicating with each other? I know it's irrating but I live with it. What bothers me more is not being able to carry a pocket knife. Hell a pencil is more deadly than a pocket knife!

Signals can screw up their navigation system. So, if you are flying to New York, you don't want to wind up in Florida.
