It's not likely to cause a problem, as a matter of fact, if you follow label directions, most toilet bowl cleaning tablets would not be expected to cause problems beyond minor stomach upset, should a dog take a drink out of the diluted water in the toilet bowl. However, bacterial-related gastrointestinal problems could occur from drinking stagnant toilet water, however, so it is still a good idea to discourage your dog from imbibing from the commode.
Therefore, NO, it is not ok. This is a terrible habit to let your dog get into. Toilets are not clean regardless of how well you clean them!!! This is a disgusting habit and should be curtailed immediately. If you will allow your dog to drink from a nasty toilet, what else will you allow it to do?
Close the lid on the toilet!!! Toilets are for human waste products. Not a dog's water bowl. Provide clean fresh water daily for the dog in a consistent place such as the kitchen or covered area in your yard and see that he ONLY drinks there.
If the dog still insists on drinking out of the toilet. Get him one of his own and place it in the kitchen so you can change the water often. I'm sure this will become the conversation piece of the neighborhood and maybe the whole city!!!
I'd start using a spray bottle with Apple Cider Vinegar in it and start spraying the dog every time I caught him with his head in the toilet.

Sure. The water gets exchanged frequently, and is cleaner than fast food ice from soft drink dispensers.
Fast food toilets cleaner than ice machines

A seventh grader from Tampa recently won her school science fair with an experiment that compared levels of bacteria in the toilets and ice machines of five different fast food restaurants. According to 12-year-old Jasmine Roberts, the toilets contained less bacteria 70 percent of the time. For the toilet samples, Roberts flushed each toilet and then scooped up some water with a sterile beaker. For the ice, she took samples from machines inside the restaurants as well as from ice ordered at each drive-through window. The samples were tested at Tampa's Moffitt Cancer Center where Roberts volunteers. The video that accompanies the story has footage of a graph comparing the bacteria in toilets versus ice. Some of the differences are vast. Unfortunately, Roberts doesn't disclose the names of the restaurants.

actually, yeah, it's fine. if the toilet is reasonably clean, it will not harm them. lets face it, dogs eat things that you would rather they not. The germ factor is not what you would think. It can be an annoying habit, that's for sure. Do you not keep fresh water out for them? they do like it cool and fresh. Unless your house water is bad enough to be harmful to you, it will not harm them either. Tests have shown that the same germs and like amounts exist throughout the house, not just in the bathroom. Most all dogs, humans and most other species that might be found commonly in a household have natural immunities to them. some of the more exotic animals do not.
dogs do look at you funny when you use their fresh water supply for what you would normally use a toilet for. Why you doin that in my drinking water the look seems to say.

I saw on Oprah the other day that a teens class science project found out that the toilet water at most resturaunts was cleaner than the water from the ice served. They had the kid on and then also confirmed her findings. So I'd say yes the water is ok for the dog and us to drink!!! ha ha..

It isn't uncommon by any means! The water itself is the same water source that you would put in your dogs dish. I guess it depends on how clean you keep your topilet and what kind of chemicals you use. I however, have never seen a dog get sick from drinking out of the toilet.

I'd say so. Studies have shown that there is more bacteria in the ice at fast food restaurants than there was in the toilet water of the same restaurant.

It is okay for them to drink water from the toilet because they still drink water from anywhere else so it is okay. Keep in mind that when they drink to much water they also get bloated like us so don't give him or her to much water.

If it is clean then I think so. But I don't know for sure... But i've read in a science magazine that toilet water is cleaner than sink water. But I really don't know for sure, so it might not be.

Many, many dogs drink from toilets. Just be sure to flush your toilet after you go, otherwise your dog will be drinking your waste, which is not good.

As long as it is clean yes. It is also considered to be a sign of intelligence for a dog b/c the dog knows it is a constant source of fresh water
