Many people use crate training with great success, so please don't worry that you're being mean. Hundreds of good dog trainers would agree : crate training is the most effective way to train your dog to not make potty mistakes in the house. So, many dogs must be in their crates in the house, especially when their humans cannot pay 100% attention to them.
It's up to you to add value to the crate, so that your dog will go in there willingly - even run in there - because his being in that crate has been rewarded a lot. Here are some sites to help :

You must not ever reward the dog for fussing in his crate. Ignore the crying, and reward quiet behavior in the crate. "Ignore means : no shouting, no talking, no "Quiet!", etc.
Crate games with your pup will help a lot. These really helped my 1-yr old rescue pup get over separation anxiety!

First, is the crate the right size - can he lay down comfortably? Does he have something to lay on? Does he have a chew toy in with him?
How do 'you' react when he whines?
If he is getting a response from you, he will continue to whine.
Put him in the crate. Do not look at him. Do not talk to him. A few minutes AFTER he stops whining, let him out of the crate and praise him for being a good dog.
Each time you put him in the crate, increase the time he is in, and is not whining.

If he only whines for quarter-hour, to be straightforward i do not imagine you've a lot to ***** about extremely. only ignore about it. complicated i recognize, although the more desirable you react, indignant or no longer, the more desirable he will save on doing this. in the experience that your canine receives fairly no reaction from you, he receives the message. Do you've the crate lined, precise and three sides? Has he ever been put in there because the outcome of doing some thing incorrect? presented he would not go with nutrition, to bypass to the lavatory, a drink, only positioned him in there with some canine biscuits and say goodnight, see you interior the morning (or words like that lol) and walk away. i wouldn't dream of criticising you for utilising a crate. I have used them for decades and locate them an exquisite help.

Is there a reason why you put him in the crate when you are there? Dogs are very social animals and pack animals. They NEED to be part of a pack - even if it is a human pack. He is feeling lonely and isolated and away from his "pack".
Try putting some chew toys in his crate. They make a wonderful toy called Buster Cube. You put kibble in it and it'll keep him busy for hours. Available at your local pet supply or FosterSmith.com

Hi toomanypets!. I put my dog in a crate when she was a pup, it helps with house training. Try keeping him in the crate for 5 minutes at a time then let him out. Then keep increasing the time by 2 or three minutes each time. Do this for a couple days until you can build up his confidence. This will let him know you haven't gone anywhere and he isn't stuck.

The reason he whines is that he hears you and he wants to be with you! Move the crate into another room. It the other room, have a radio playing for him, so he doesn't get lonely, and you should be fine. This is how I crate my dogs. Good luck!

My dog whines also, but it is because she knows we are leaving... without her! When we are home and she wants to sleep she goes in with no problem, (she starts the whining, when she is told to go in). I don't see why you have to put your dog in the crate while you are at home. Your dog is going to hate the crate.

Because for one, dogs HATE to be locked up. They need to run. It makes it worse when you are right there, it's like teasing him. Why keep him in a crate if you're right there??? That's so mean.
And also, your crate is probably too small.

If he just had surgery, he is probably just a little scared! I don't think you personally did anything wrong, it just freaks him out a little.
