The left knee feels weak and some pain when climbing stairs or a ladder and walking down a steep driveway.

Well, you could have pulled something that would cause the pain. Also, there could be mild tendinitis in your knee. It kind of depends on what sort of stress your knee has been under lately - any over exertion could also cause pain.

Probably a cartilage problem where it has deteriorated to a point where now the bone is rubbing up against bone. Have you participated in a lot of sports? Upper knee pain is predominantly associated with athletes who must perform a lot of cutting.

Take some ibuprofen for any inflammation and swelling and ice it.
