I'm leaving in about 3 years for college and I'm not sure if I should get a dog or not. My mom won't let me get one for another year because she's going to school and won't have time to clean up after the dog. I try to tell her that I'll clean up after the dog, but she doesn' believe me. Plus, I'm the only one in my family who wants a dog and after I leave for college I'll have to leave her with my family. Is it worth it to have my own dog for 2 years and leave or should I just wait 'til I have my own place?

I Don't Think You Should Because If You Are Going To College In 3 Years And You Get A Dog When You Go To College It Won't Have A Home If Your Parents Say No.

trust me you need to make sure your family is willing to take responsibility for the dog in your absence before you consider getting one at this point. In 2 years make sure that the dog is trained and able to listen to commands from everyone in the family.

In 2 years the dog will be an adult and won't be as hard to take care of as a pup so they may be willing to help you out. I suggest you all get together and look up information on puppy care and dog care and assign duties right now. If you are the only one taking care of the dog for the two years that you live there your family will have to learn everything and the dog will have to adjust to a new handler. You guys should all pitch in and take care of the dog so its used to everyone and can make the transition easier when you leave. Keep in mind that your mother is busy but ask her to make some time with the dog (she can accompany you on walks or help give it baths) so that you guys all form a bond.

If your family is not willing to help you in this regard then I suggest you wait until you are on your own.

You shouldn't get a dog until you are out of school and or have your own place. Owning dogs takes a lot of time. It wouldn't be fair to you family or the dog to leave it with people who might not like it or to keep it for two years then give it away or whatever you plan on doing with it. Just remember dogs get attached to people.

I know how you feel. I have wanted a dog my whole life. i am now 21, and i STILL don't have a dog. I begged my parents as well, if they would have got me one it may have not been the best decision. Once i started school i have almost NO time for myself, and that would mean even less time for a dog. Even now, after i have graduated i am struggling financially, i am not able to properly care for a dog. If your family doesn't want a dog, you need to wait until you are on your own and can properly care for a dog. It isn't fair to a dog to get him now to satisfy your own needs, when in two years he is probably going to have to be re-homed. Try to think of the best intrest for the dog, and wait until you are out on your own.

Wait until you get your own place.. Having a dog is wonderful but its a really big commitment and even if you do take really good care of the animal your family still has to deal with it being in the house or yard or ect.. So I would wait.. Theres always plenty of dogs that need good homes so just hold off and wait until your completely sure (no doubt on your mind) that you do want to commit yourself to an animal then you should go ahead. : )

I got a cat when I was 12. I brought him to college for 1 yr but he was miserable w/ the change in lifestyle. I am now 27 and he lives w/ my parents. My sister got a dog for her 15th birthday. For her first year of college the dog stayed w/ our parents, but then once my sis moved out of the dorms and had an apt the doggie came back :) My sister is now 25 and the dog lives w/ her very happily :) So... you may have to leave the dog for a year or 2 but it should work out if she is an adaptable type :)

Give you mom a break. Wait a year. The dog will be a part of the family before you leave. Try to get a smail lap dog for your mom. Something to love after you leave.

I would wait if I were you. Your life is going to become very busy and it won't be fair to your family for dog to leave it behind. I would wait until you can get a place of your own.
