Hi, your 5.5 days may be a bit tight to do so much travel that you want. What you can do is to arrange a flight into Chiangmai, from there, you can fly to Mae Hong Son if you like, but I would rather you stay put in Chiangmai.
From Chiangmai, there are many agencies that do tours to the hilltribes. Do check around that it is not to one of the posed hilltribe village but to a genuine hilltribe village. Ask around while in Chiangmai. Some agencies will tell you of the fees to enter a hilltribe village, be wary, cause the fees are more likely for them than for the hilltribes.
This can include a trip to Chiangrai too. And more hilltribes along the way. Good to visit the Opium Museum there.
From Chiangmai, you can do a bus trip to Sukhothai. The ruins there are quite magnificent, you may need more than a day to cover the places.
This will leave you without Bangkok! Unless you do your Sukhothai in 1 day and then spend the rest in Bangkok.
You can write me if you want to work out this schedule at thaitourinfo@yahoo.com. Will be happy to help you out.

Well, you run a risk of spending more time in transit than visiting..
your itineraries all look quite busy to me.. MHS is lovely but I would doubt you have enuf time to both go there and see much..
If you fly to CM, maybe do a couple of day trips from there and take a bus back to Bkk - - stopping in Sukkhothai then continuing on down to bkk from there, that might be best..
I have seen monkeys in the wild at Doi Inthanon which would be a day trip from CM... And there is an elephant preserve if you are returning from CM near Lampang..
People are everywhere and friendly - - smile first!! - and if you want a preliminary language guide, send me your email address and I will pass one along to you that I made for friends..

Listen......2 hours driving from Bangkok you can get it all. The name is Kanchanaburi. So are you into stunning nature, waterfalls, jungle, tiger temple, hot springs, monkeys, elephant trekking, rafting, Moon hill tribes, River Kwai bridge, war museum, train trip along amazing mountain side, sleeping on rafts and be near the people and feel the culture, then this is the place.
I have been guide for 8 years here, so I should know.

With that short a time, I'd spend it and aroung Bangkok. Why spend most of your time travelling? Temples, food, smells, sights, and sounds are aplenty in BKK. A trip to the River Kwai is doable in a day. All that will get you plenty of culture.

if you ever want to meet people of a country, go to their open air markets, or small shops where the owner is all so the sales person. I visited Mexico and I could be still visiting the wonderful people that would refer me on to the next person, all you have to do is have an interest in one thing, and you will get to meet a whole lot of other people that like the same thing, Use flowers for example. I visited an open market, where I talked to a garden owner, who put me in touch with a person that grew exotic flowers and I was given a personal showing of all of his flowers that he was so proud of. I think you get my drift,
