he was layed off in dec 2005 and he collected unemployment for a month before going back to school in 2006 so he actually didnt work. does he still have to file taxes? he resides in new york city.

He is not required to file any tax return, federal, state, or city. He can file to get a refund of withholding if there were any.

If your income in 2006 was only $1200, you do not have to file a federal return unless it was from self-employment. Since it was unemployment comp, then no you don't have to file federal.

State and city returns might still have to be filed depending on their laws.

In NY state, you have to claim any income. And the unemployment office will send a notice to the gov. anyway,so he better file and claim. If he is under 21yrs. he can file alone and his parents can still claim him on their taxes as long as he is in school.

Yes, everyone has to file taxes, even if you will have owed nothing.
