You must determine the use of this shot gun.
Home defense I use 12 gauge pump with an 18 to 20 inch barrel.
Small game I use a 20 gauge pump with veritable chock system.
For duck goose or turkey and deer either 12 or 10 gauge with veritable chock system.
Skeet and or sporting clay I use 20 gauge over and under but others like the 12 gauge for this application.
For me there is no one weapon system that works for all, I there for have to have several shot gun for the many task at hand.
Where as others make do with one weapon.

the 12 gauge is the most common and comes in many different sizes and configurations. It's the least expensive to shoot and you can buy ammunition with little recoil or a whole bunch, depending on what you're shooting at and what your comfort level is. I've had my 12 gauge since i was about 13, so with the right ammo, and a good butt pad.. you're not going to hurt yourself with it. They can be used to hunt squirrel up to bear... so it's best all around shotgun gauge there is. The length of the gun will depend on what you're going to use it for. If you're not a hunter and will only use it for home defense, the shorter the better (it's difficult to maneuver through the house with a 30 inch barrel). If you're going to use it for hunting, the longer the barrel is, the tighter your shot pattern will be, so usually the longer the better. If you're a small person and are going to use light loads to avoid high recoil, you should get a pump action gun or double barrel instead of a semi-auto. A lot of semi-auto's won't function correctly with lightly loaded ammunition. If you're going to use higher loads, the semi-auto will kick a little less as the recoil spring will absorb some of the shock. Hope this helps! Remember, your number one concern in buying / owning a gun is safety! Everything else is secondary! Good luck and be SAFE!

Get a 12 gauge Remington 870 with the choke tubes. You won't regret it.
