Thanks for all of your opinions. I know that my avitar looks like I am 19 but alas, I am 42. Long enough in the tooth to have learn the obvious lessons with booze. It was just that I didn't believe it and it was to settle an argument.
Cheers all

I am afraid it's nonsense. Milk is not thick enough to line your stomach to protect it and the belief is an old wive's tale. It is more likely the case that milk have some benefit for those who suffer from hyperacidity since the alkaline nature of milk temporarily neutralises the acid present, however it will not stop continued acid production and it will not calm the effects of alcohol on soft tissue in anyway other than VERY short term, mostly it's the cooling nature that helps so you would be as well to swallow some ice. If you drank a glass of milk at 7pm and went out at eight, had your first alcoholic drink at 8.30pm then virtually none of the milk you drank at 7pm would be in your stomach any longer.

No it's not true. Milk is a dairy prduct, and if it mixes with something that contains a lot of fat or something that's acidic, it will curdle, and worse, make you very sick. Whoever said it's true obviously don't know anything about science, nevermind old wives' tales. And, it doesn't matter whether you drink it before OR after alcohol intake, cos in the end they're both going to mix together, your stomach only has 1 compartment girl, you're not a cow :P
Another hint, never drink milk if you're going to drink juice. But of course, you all knew that didn't you? :P lol

This has been a widely held belief however, the absolute truth is that it does not stop alcohol absorption. Milk is a food and therefore if it is in your stomach prior to drinking it will slow down the alcohol absorption of the first few drinks only.
If you eat a good healthy meal before drinking this will slow down the alcohol absorption and if you drink water between drinks you will also help your body to dispose of the alcohol and stay hydrated.
Everyone has a favourite hangover cure, the best one of all is to not get dehydrated from alcohol as it is the dehydration that causes the 'dead dog' feeling.

I don't have a way of proving it but... milk taken before alcohol will coat the stomach for a few minutes only. Alcohol will pass into intestines and will be taken up into bloodstream and a percentage will be given off through the lungs and the rest through the kidneys and liver. Therefore, alcohol will get you into trouble whether socially or driving. It can't be hidden very long.

Milk will line the stomach as it will also line the throat. Singers (professional or amateur) are told not to drink milk before a concert because it won't let the full range out. However, alcohol will curdle the milk so you could become rather sick so I would avoid that combination myself.

It is true, but for it to be effective you need to drink about 3 pints of milk. on the other hand if you have a meal before drinking, this can be just as good. What the milk does is to slow down the absorption of alcohol.

Its an old wives tale - it curdles in your stomach with the alcohol and makes you throw up lumps of rotten milk xxx

I heard that anything fatty or greasy helps, like if you eat greasy chips or something before hand. I've heard of people drinking olive oil etc before drinking a lot, but thats gross. why not just drink a bit less if you don't want to get too drunk?

It will only work if the milk is semi skimmed and 15 months past its use by date, added with blended purified bacon rind and wholegrain mustard topped with neopolitan ice cream...

The theory behind this is that if you drink this concoction then you will be to busy either being sick or on your way to hospital to worry abour drinking any alcohol at all....

Hope that helps... :)
