Very good question. I come from a faith that believes that "speaking in tongues" refers to the ability to speak an unfamiliar language in a time of need, such as standing in front of many hostile folks from a different culture and suddenly, for no apparent reason, being able to speak in a language they understand and be able to understand them.

If you are in a denomination that does not believe that speaking tongues is for "today", the Baptism of the Holy Spirit comes at the time of salvation, the Holy Spirit baptizes you and indwells you to empower you for Christian living.
If your denomionation DOES believe in speaking in tongues, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a separate event, after salvation, at which time you begin speakling in tongues.

some demonimations, notibly the Assemblies of God, say there is a sign of the Baptism of the HOly SPirit being tounges.... you will not find a place in the Bible that explicity says this and I would doubt it is valid... but neither would I look down on them either
yes the we are sealed by the Holy Spirit for salvation, we are continually filed with the HOly Spirit as we wak with God. No where I can see every Christian speaks with tounges either sign or gift
in the BIble when the gospel was first preached in a new realm the ENTIRE church had a manifestation of the Holy SPirit.
1) at Pentacost all the believers, and the gospel went to the Jews of Jerusalem
2) at Samaria around Acts 8, the Holy SPiirt fell on ALL the Samaritans,... the half Jew half gentiles
3) the first gentile believers... like Cornelius and family ... and the Etheopian Eunich who was a God fearing gentile... the Holy PSirit fell on ALL the believers as well
4) very much later in Ephesians, the disciples of John the Baptist also had the same experience... and were even (re)baptized in water... perhaps because John spoke often of the one who would come (Jesus) who would baptize not with water but the Holy Spirit and fire
nowadays, perhaps there is some losing sight of the Holy Spirit flalling on the whole church at salvation and making it as if it is only special highly spiritual people who are moved by the Holy Spirit
You do not want too low a view of the Holy SPirit who can work in quiet ways and works in the whole church and in all of salvation. You do want to emphasize the living empowing pressence of God. One of the works of the Holy Spirit is to remind you of Jesus words and to glorif Jesus so if an experience doesnt do that... if it doesnt make you hunger for th eword ... and glorify Jesus... well... perhaps you should avoid it

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit involves the receiving the fullness of the person of the Holy Spirit. Speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of the Baptism, but is only one facet of it. The primary purpose for receiving the Holy Spirit is "you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My(Jesus') witnesses..." (Acts 1:8)
Speaking in tongues has two additional functions, namely, it operates as a revelatory gift of the Spirit when in conjunction with the interpretation of tongues; and it also serves as a means of spirit inspired prayer for the edification (up-building) of the believer. (see I Corinthians, 14:1-40)

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is when you accept and receive the Holy Spirit to work His power in you to live as a Christian. The Holy Spirit is our Instructor and our Teacher and opens our minds and heart to God's truths in the Word of God. Also He is the one that helps us to communicate with God. Another thing He does is that He edifies Jesus through us, as we sing praises and worship the Lord. The works of the Holy Spirit in us shows in the evidence of the fruit of the Holy Spirit, and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are available but not mandatory for us to use them. Speaking in tongues is a gift, that some people say is necessary to use if you are baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit.
It is a gift used for praying when you don't know how or what to pray for in some circumstances. It is also the Holy Spirit praying through you from your heart. Tongues can also be used as a sign to un believers as it was in the book of Acts. It can also be used along with the gifts of Knowledge and Discernment.
