It really depends on which cuisine you are looking for:
Indian/Bangladeshi - Brick Lane, Whitechapel E1
Turkish and Vietnamese - Kingsland Road, Shoreditch up to Stoke Newington
Chinese - China Town, north of Leicester Square
Vegetarian Indian - Drummond Street, near Euston Station
British, French, Italian restaurant are more widely spread.
There are numerous restaurants at Canary Wharf, on the DLR & Jubilee line.
I recently dined at an excellent Lebanese at the southern end of Kensington Church Street called Randa. Further north the Notting Hill Gate area is a good place to restaurant hunt
The London evening paper the Evening Standard has excellent restaurant reviews The listings magazine Time Out publishs a great Restaurant Guide.
Of Course there is always the net.... lots of sites there.

There are tons all over London mate, it depends what you want both in choice of food and price bracket. The obvious choices include places like The Ivy, The Bluebird and The River Cafe (all quite pricey). You'll find cuisine form all around the world in London and many Pubs do excellent food. I have to disagree with the first answerer as British Food is excellent and not at all bland! It would only be fair to say that if this were 1953!

There are so many - I find sites like Top Table are great. Ask the people around you too. Often the back streets or less known areas are good. Goodge street has a wonderful range of well prices places and lots of choice!

Charlotte Street (W1, tube Goodge Street) in London is famous for its restaurants. You'll find different cuisines and different prices, the best thing to do is almost go there and look at their menus. At busy times such as Saturday evenings you usually do have to book to secure a table.

Simpson's on the Strand comes highly recommended, specializing in prime rib. Is pricey. Your best bets are foreign restaurants as English food is really bland.
