If you want a big dog get a Golden Retriever they are very friendly dogs and if you want a good company it is the one, but if you are looking for a medium dog, get a beagle, they are funny, friendly but it is not easy to train them.
You should read a book about breeds, but these are the most friendly from my point of view. You may also adopt a dog, which is a great idea by these days. you can find great dogs that need a home.

Sheltie dogs make great pets. They can be small or medium sized and very smart. They don't cost much to take care of, easily trained and have a very good disposition.
Its really up to you. I agree, read up on different breeds. Go visit the animals at shelters and have some interaction with them. Or you could even ask a friend that has a dog you like (and that likes you) if you could borrow the dog for a few days and see how it fits in with your lifestyle and living arrangements.
You will know when you meet the right pet for you.
Good luck!

I thinkit's best to go think about the amount of room you have, and how much time you want to spend with it. Also, get a good book at the library that gives details about the different types. When you are finally ready to go to places where they have dogs, you will know by how you feel when you see the dog if it's right for you. try playing with the dog first. Also, you may want to consider adopting one from a shelter. You will save a life, and it will get spayed or neutered, and be a better pet. Good luck.

People are going to give you their favorite type of breed. If you are looking for a dog for yourself it is best to do your own research on the different breeds. You have to remember to consider things like how much room you have for a dog, how much exercise you can give your dog, do you want a lap dog, a guard dog, or do you want a dog for a certain purpose? Like an agility dog. Also think about grooming, do you want a long haired dog with a thick coat? Or do you want a dog with an easy to care for short coat? There are so many things that go into dog breeds. Just look through the dogs that catch your eye and read up on them. make sure they are the kind of dog you are looking for. I like these two websites to find different dog breeds: dogbreedinfo.com and AKC.org. They have a lot of different breeds. And once you decide what kind of dog you want, you can either go to a GOOD breeder, or get him from an animal shelter. And animal shelters have a lot of mutts, if you find a mutt that you like, a mixed breed might be right for you also. I hope this helps. Good luck finding your new dog!!!
Dogs that i think make great pets are pit bulls, boxers, bulldogs, shih tzus, boston terriers, pugs. These are just a few of my favorite. I also find a lot of mixed breed dogs that i fall in love with.

You should take into account the amount of space you have (does the dog need a large space to run around or will an apt. suffice). In addition, consider the energy level of the dog, etc. I would suggest using google and searching for a site which details different breeds. In my personal opinion, I would also opt to adopt from a shelter as there are so many animals who never find homes. Also --- please, please, please spay or neuter your animal. This is often reimbursed by the shelters, so just ask.
