Do not use motor oil, burnt or unburnt unless you want to poison your poor dog. It is very dangerous and can cause blood poisoning along with other problems, such as liver damage.
Please take your dog to the vet so the vet can determine the type of mange and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

There is two kinds of mange, one being Demodex and the other Sarcoptes. Demodex is the easier one to treat as long as no infection is present. If the dog has runny sores and is miserable with the scratching, it most likely has an underlying infection. Soothing baths with an oatmeal shampoo can help soothe the skin, Frontline or another topical flea and tick killer will help kill off the mange mite. If the dog is very young it could have gotten it from his mother when his immune system was weak. A lot of dogs that have come up from Puerto Rico for adoption have slight cases of mange. It can be managed but your Vet can get you on the right track right away. The mange will get worse before it gets better because a lot of the hair has already been damaged by the mite and will fall out.
Hang in there, it will get better. Please try and get your dog to the Vet or and animal welfare place that helps dogs it will recover a lot quicker.

if it's demodex, the vet can prescribe a Mitiban dip done 2 times, 2 weeks apart. and some ointment for the itching. if it's sarcoptic, the vet will most likely trea with a series of ivermectin injestions. you have to have a vet do a scraping to see which kind it is. they are both mites, and as has been stated in other answers, sarcoptic is very contagious! so get it taken care of.
how do you know it's mange? it could be something else. that's why you need to go to the vet!

no. there are two different types of mange dogs usually get. sarcoptic can be transferred to you and other pets. demodectic is just on your dog, and can't go to other dogs and people. your vet will need to do a skin scraping to determine which one. and then they will reccomend treatment. if left untreated aside from your dog can become bald, it will stress their immune system and lead to other health problems. you need to see a vet asap and see what's going on.

yes the old timers used to use a mixture of fuel oil and creosote and rub it all over the coat of the dog. I have also seen people use fuel oil by itself. the drawback is that it stinks very much so not a good idea on an indoor pet cause it has to be left on for several days. it does no harm to the animal but like I said it does stink and is not the easiest thing to clean up. I have used it myself on a few of my hunting dogs and I can contest that it does actually work.

best thing to do is take your dog for examination to your vet to determine what type of mange your dog has first of all. and they ll per-scribe the correct treatment.

i've heard you use oil that you drain from the car and mix yellow sulfar with the oil to make the dip. then dip the dog in it .we did that to a dog that we kept outside and it works. It is a mess though but that is an old remedy.

no, only the vet can treat it and that is if it is not the worst kind of mange and if it hasn't gotten too bad.
