well as so far the answers you have got are from Americans yet again boasting about how great their country is, i shall tell you.
first of all you can get an air rifle you don't need a license for one of those unless it is above 12ft/lbs (for an air pistol it is 6ft/ibs) then you would need an FAC which stands for firearms certificate. with an FAC you can get more powerful air rifles and rifles but you need to say why you want/need one. if you are lucky some firearms officers would tell you if you ask what they like to hear. if you want a shotgun you have to get a shotgun certificate which is pretty much the same process as an FAC. and if you want a pistol they are now banned because of a massacre that happened i think but there are places you are allowed to go and use one.
hope this was of some help

We are in the US, so you will need to double check.
It is VERY difficult - nearly impossible if you want a handgun - but some hunting rifles and shotguns are available.
Basically, no "repeating" arms (something that has a magazine which holds more than one round) are easy to get. Side by side or over and under shotguns - we think - are allowed.
Some genuine antiques are allowed (Think black powder - these are still good for hunting.) Some people in the US prefer them. (I like flintlock, but have never gone hunting.)
Try to find out if there is a gun club - they will be the best source of information for you. There are also likely to be local variances you need to follow.
Best of luck!
(Or move to certain States in the US - we live in Nevada - while not easy, it is legal for qualified residents to own machine guns (we don't but we know some folks that do!))

Oh boy, I think you can get a shotgun, thats a long barrelled rifle, if you shoot sporting clays. However I'm sure their all sorts of laws over in Big Brother Land to prevent you from actually Owning one. You have three options
1. Go the legal way, you will never get a pistol this way and it will cost you quite a bit.
2. I'm pretty sure northern ireland has a pretty big black market for guns, I'm sure if you knew the right people you could get ahold of one.
3. Marry an American, Come to the grand ol USA, walk down to Wal-mart and pick out whatever ya fancy. (not valid in California).

It's unfortunate the imbeciles that run your country have passed the laws to keep you from defending yourself, but if anything, you can own a 'long' gun. Rifle or Shotgun.

If you can't buy one, build one. Just don't tell anyone that you have it. You can find the info you need on the net.
