I can't imagine a scenario where it would be important to know this. Yet they omit so much from history, science, and literature.

Well, a stalagmite will never fall from the ceiling and hit you on the head.

It is important in geology - which is probably where they are teaching you this.

And YES, I agree there a lots of things that are more important. Obviously, you are aware of this - do like people used to do, become educated in spite of school.

Totally, they banned Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn at my school in Washington State where i if were to read those id learn about history in a way and come on Stalagmites...i have never even saw one in real life

Oh, I've often had complete strangers come up to me on the streetcorner and say, "Could you please settle an argument for us? My friend here claims that stalagmites hang down from the ceiling of a cave, and I say just the opposite. Who's right?" Yessiree, there've been many times I've thanked my lucky stars for old Mrs. Fritsch who taught me thr truth about stalagmites so many years ago.

But how many things do you learn in history, literature, and math that you couldn't imagine a scenario where it'd be important to know it? That's the essence of school, they have to touch on everything, no matter how useless.

in case it comes in a game of Trivia Pursuit. and in case of history, science, and literature almost every year that new school are printed ,they out of date by the time the reach the classroom, so its easy to generalize.
