If so, what was the cost and how many days a week did you send your child? Were you happy with the results?

I am a middle school teacher currently tutoring a 3rd grader. We were working twice a week for about 2 hours at a time, but it seemed to be too much for her at once, so i suggested 1 hr/day mon-thurs. this has seemed to work the best because we can do a little each day and be consistent. it does, however, require me to rearrange my schedule, but since i'm young and living on my own it really doesn't affect me too much. her mom and i worked out a price of $25/hr. when i asked at my school, i was told the average price for tutoring in the district was $35-50/hr depending on the tutor, which I personally found ridiculous.

I've never hired a private tutor but I've tutored privately. Twenty-five to $30 per hour sounds right for the first hour in a given session with a professional. For time beyond the first hour in a session, minimum wage is reasonable. That additional time is far less effective, so paying far less for it is fair.

Two one-hour sessions a week might be necessary initially to maximize progress, but you may be able to scale that back to once a week after the tutor has made some headway.

I have never hired one, but I used to be a tutor at my local college. You can call your local college and ask for tutors. They charge anywhere from $10 - $15 per hour and they are college students, so they really know their stuff. One word of caution, your child has to want to do the work, the tutor will GUIDE the child, but we don't do the work for them. Make sure your child is putting forth their best efforts before you waste any money on tutoring. My 13 year old came to me with an issue and I looked right in the chapter and found the answer. I told her that I was not going to do her homework for her!
