I know the Olympus E-330 and Panasonic Lumix have the LCD where you can have it ON WHILE TAKING PICTURES, not just a preview after......but what about the NIKON D40?!?!!!

No, there is no LCD preview with the Nikon D40. And, to be honest, LCD preview is an unecessary feature, especially in a digital SLR.
Yes, you lose the preview through the LCD (but you have an optical preview throught the lens, meaning you see what is actually out there, not what a miniature video camera screen is showing you) But you gain so much more. The speed of an SLR comes from the fact that part of the shuttering system is mechanical. The mechanical shutter means that an LCD preview is not possible, because the camera's sensor (the CCD) is behind the closed shutter. Some higher end DSLRs have a micro-sensor in the viewfinder area that can show a preview on the LCD, but that's more a gimmick than a regularly needed feature.

An LCD means you have to hold the camera away from your body to shoot. The D40, while lighter than other DSLRs, is still a bit weighty, and you'll get tired trying to take pictures like that. You get more stabilty and faster response from a DSLR. And the picture quality (becasue ofthe size of the Nikon D40's sensor) willbe much better than any other small point &shoot.

Now, if you want the best of both worlds, you can get an adapter from ZigView. It is a small LCD swivel screen that mounts over the Nikon D40's viewfinder. It is essentially a little pinhole camera with a flip out LCD screen. I wouldonyl use that if I was usingthe D40 on a tripodand didn't want to crane my neck down low during low angle shots.

No live view LCD ... no reason to have one unless you are doing a lot of photography through a microscope or telescope. The optical few finders are optical, so you are always looking through the lens until you press the shutter release and then the scree blacks out for about 100 milliseconds. You see what the lens sees. That is the nature of a SLR or DSLR camera. If you go into a camera store and look through the camera, you will see all this. Poor quality images has more to do with your skills using a camera than the cameras itself, although a DSLR, certainly is much more flexible than any P&S camera like a sensor that is over 15 times larger than a P&S and interchangeable lenses
