Trials are trials, for everybody. I don't know of any Christians that don't go through them. But there is a point in faith when you recognize that some situations are beyond your personal control. It's then that a Christian can smile and be reminded that God, Who loves them, IS in control.
Pessimism just brings you down, and everyone around you also.
Faith in Christ is perfect optimism, and He strengthens the Christian to accept whatever results of our trials come our way.
It's really about relinquishing our will, and adhering to His.

Wow! I can definitely relate!
I remember when my mother was sick, and I felt like the only person in the world who was experiencing that.
Of course, in the same week, a coworker lost her father to cancer, a person was in a car accident that smashed half his skull, one of my friend's teens ran away from home, and my brother's best friend died of an overdose. Poor me. But my mom got better.
If you feel people are phony or insincere, they probably aren't going to open their hearts to you and let you know that they too have real life burdens (regardless of their religious affiliation). Try asking any one of your phony friends what the hardest moment in their life was because nobody escapes life without trials.
The brave face that you so naively label phony (and others hypocritical) is one that I've seen even the finest people wear. I sincerely hope you heal quickly.
Live well

In the last two years I have been in a serious car accident, had one of my children diagnosed with major health problems, my niece has been having seizures and they can't find the cause, my mother had a biopsy for potential breast cancer, she then had a hemorrhage behind her eye that required surgery. Just when you'd think it couldn't get worse my parents were hit by a drunk driver their car was totaled but at least they were not seriously injured, then my dad was diagnosed with cancer. He had surgery which took twice as long as they expected, had complications and was hospitalized twice as long as they thought he would be and then we found out they didn't get all the cancer. He had to have radiation, then I was diagnosed with a life altering disease only to later be told my doctor was wrong. I have also had two major surgeries in the last 6 weeks. I have lots to be stressed about but I am not. I could be angry and sad but instead I have joy! The reason is not that I "act" like life is perfect but that I have faith that all things happen for a reason and that I don't look to my circumstances to make me happy! I find my worth in Christ and not in the world - if you had the relationship with God that I have you would understand how I can be happy! I hope someday you find it!

SWEG's. Sickly Wet Evangelical Grins.
These I know well, on the faces of people who had been told that to be a Christian was to be happy, who then felt under pressure to display this at all times, and in all circumstances, whether they felt it or not.
It is in my experience one of the reasons the church gets accused of "shooting its own wounded", since individuals often don't feel able to display their true sadness.

Phony...that is the correct word. Actually, Jesus had a word for people who put on a mask to hide themselves...hypocrite.
