Ergotamine is used to treat migraine headaches and cluster headaches. Both types of headaches are thought to be caused by an increase in the diameter of the blood vessels in the head, which results in more blood flow, increased pressure on nearby tissues, and pain. Ergotamine is a vasoconstrictor; it acts by constricting (narrowing) the blood vessels.
