When doing squats you should keep your back straight and your knees should not pass 90 degrees. It sounds like you are lifting with your back and not your legs. Have a trainer look at you when you are doing them to determine if you are performing the lift correctly.

Maybe you are not lifting properly or you may be trying to do too much too quick. You should check with an instructor on this. If you still experience this low back pain then there is a chance that one of the five lumbar vertebrae or more may be subluxated, a term used when one or more bones in the low back are misalligned. When this happens, nerves are compromised and the soft tissue is pressed upon causing pain and muscle spasm. You may want to check with your local chiropractic doctor and have him/her evaluate you with orthopedic and or x-rays of the lumbar spine.

If there is shooting pain down your legs, you have a herniated disc. If not, you might be doing too much weight. Do the leg press. Squats can do a lot of damage if they are not done correctly.

You either have poor form or you are lifting too heavy. Drop the weight and work on strengthening you abdominal and lower back muscles before your pain becomes too serious.
