Actually, it was invented by a man named Bobby Henderson to illustrate the perceived absurdity of intelligent design.

For fun! It's a parody of religion and creationism designed to show just how silly taking myths literally is.

And even though I'm not an Atheist myself, I love the Flying Spaghetti Monster. He makes me hungry for noodles though. ;-)

They needed a reason to skip out of afternoon classes and over a spaghetti and meatball lunch, that was the best they could come up with.

because one of the science teachers got pissed off that he had to teach intelligent design so he said the hell with it i might as well have fun with it so he invented the flying spaghetti monster as a way of saying do you see how silly it is to say that god created the universe and just as a parody to goof around with

To parody theism and in particular creationism since they requested that as FSMism is every bit as scientific as creationism it should be taught in schools alongside evolution and ID.
