Hi!!! I am looking for the best low-priced mountain bike. I am looking to spend between $200 - $375. As my only mode of transportation... I need a durable bike that's going to last. I will mostly be riding around town on pavement about 1-5 miles per day. I would also like to be able to use it on beginner-intermediate trails occasionally, nothing TOO hard-core, though!
I am a 5'4" petite female. I'm not quite sure what size would work best for me, the 24" bikes seem a little small and the 26" ones a little big. I'm currently using a mongoose crosstail hybrid which has been great, but needs to be replaced. I'd like a crosscountry hardtail that is light and fast.
So far I've looked around at some bikes @ the local Target, but I've read that those are generally not good enough for trail use, and they seemed a little cheap. SO... I'd like something with a little more quality that won't break the bank! Any tips, suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanx! :)

I think your best bet would be to use a low end hardtail from either gary fisher, cannondale, or trek.
Gary Fisher offers 3 hardtails between $259-359.
They are rather light and would work perfectly for the type of riding that you will be doing. The names are Advance, Tarpon, Mako. (first link)
Trek offers a hybrid bike that is more for the commute, but can handle trails. it is a 7100 at $329 (link 2)
Trek also has a nice womens hardtail, 3900, for only $349. (link 3)
Cannondale has nice bikes, but they are a little pricey. but NICE

Gary Fisher Tarpon or Specialized Hardrock. I own both and they are tough, a little on the heavy side, buy you can't beat them for the price. Components want measure up to $1000 bikes, but they are plenty good enough for riding around town and light to moderate trail use. If you can find one without the suspension fork, that would be best. The cheaper suspension forks don't really work that well anyway and just add unnecessary weight for the kind of riding you are doing. I may get a few thumbs down for suggesting bikes that don't cost as much as good used car, but these are far superior to anything you will find at K-mart, Target, Wal-mart etc.

Ashelena----please check these items at the EBAY website. The GMC Top Kick ( item no. 320075356720) brand new full suspension mt. bike is an eye catcher! Just ask the seller ( very easy) if they have a smaller size for you. (Dealer-Wheel & Sprocket). Also check the Mongoose Women's specific Tirage ( $200) All terrain bike at 'Deal Haven'----it looks really COOL! Don't buy at Target lady----the dept. store shops have faulty gears when it comes to mountain bikes----go to reputable bike shops and test drive if possible! hope this helps!

Toys R Us had a great bike for ya and it was only $179. It was the Fear Factor Mountain Bike. It was black and yellow and looked cool. I bet you would like it a lot.
If I had to pick a brand though, I would go with Trek in your price range if you don't like the bikes at Wal-Mart or Toys R Us.

I suggest the trek brand mountain bikes, they are of great quality and are not too expensive. Eddy's Bike Shop has a great selection of these.
