The easy answer--because they are forbidden, and doing something the religion forbids is offensive.

My theory? Because any picture of Mohammed is going to be a lie that somehow draws attention away from who and what Mohammed really was and is. But that's just my own opinion.

The reason is the same for any religion of the One True God. To produce an image of the Messenger is to make an image that can be worshipped. That is idolatry.

Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, The Bab and Baha'u'llah all spoke clearly on this subject. No idolatry. No images that might be worshipped.

Because it's against Islamic law to do so. Pictures of God, prophets, etc. . .is not allowed. Whether it's good or bad, it's not allowed.

But it's also against Islamic law to react the way that some Muslims around the world reacted so there's a major double standard on the part of radical Muslims.

There are two major reasons for this:

1) Islam was once polytheistic. Muhammad incorperated over 300 Gods from the Pagan tribes of Medina so that they would be persuaded to join his cult. Once he gained enough power he rejected Idol worship and worked toward a monothieistic religion for political reasons. His followers were confused by this, he told them that he was tempted by satan to include the other Gods and he made Shirk (associating Allah with other Gods) and idol worship a serious offence-that includes picture of Muhammad.

2) Once Muhammad gained enough power he no longer tolerated anybody who undermined his authority so he ordered the assassinations people who presented him in bad light by drawings or literature. Two poets that wrote satrical literature about him-abu afak and asma bint marwan were among his victims.

Because Mohammed's face looks like a butt and his neck looks like a penis, so that would qualify as pornography, which is offensive.
