I live in California, and I want to start a non-profit agency to help girls and women get a good start or re-start in life. For example, I want to buy a multi-unit apartment complex and have apartments where women can live either in a dorm setting or their own apartment if they have children and offer classes such as resume writing, filling out forms, basics such as applying for SSI, WIC, welfare, etc, and also provide other services to get them back on their feet, like helping them with money mangement, investments, buying property, etc. How do I get started? I need to apply for grants because I don't have the money myself to finance a project like this, but does anyone think this is a good idea? I want to gear this towards women who have been abused, divorced, widowed and young girls who have been in foster care or are pregnant with no where to go. I think we as women, should help each other out of debt and ignorance and I hope this is a good idea.

I want this to be a relatively short term program, no more than 2 years. I think that two years of assistance is more than enough to get most women on their feet, by providing either free or very low cost housing, depending upon their financial situation, assitance in savings, creating a budget and providing self help education classes that will help them to be on their own within two years of starting the program.

I think it is an OUTSTANDING idea. I would make a required amount to be paid after getting a job or whatever, and all monies that are paid towards rent be put into a savings account for that person, that after successful completion of your program terms and conditions is used towards a down payment towards their new dwelling. Your program is a wonderfully compassionate idea, but please take heed, and get some very strong willed and soft spoken women to work for and or with you. What will be your age limits on the male children. There are women who have teenage sons that are abused, and become homeless, and need help. Maybe also an non resident placement program, with regular non resident services. Get involved with your local food pantries. Also, a Survivers Support Group would be a Phanominal Idea. A great resource and starting point would be to call some of your local shelters and childrens advocate centers and tell them what you are trying to do and ask for their advice and opinions. Just remember they are like assholes, everyone has them, take what you want and leave the rest. When you feel like giving up and that it is never going to happen, just remember Passion and Purpose!!! Here is a place to call, it's called House of Hope in Lexington, Missouri. When you call ask for Francis. 1-888-259-6795. You can tell them Shannon gave you the #. Best of luck to you. God Bless!

There are org's that do this. Sec 8 social services YWCA you can use them as models to start with. What about women with mental health issues that may not be able to work. If you start up a non-profit org. there are alot of ways to get money. I was involved in NY state where we got women driving and a car. Pd repairs & ins for 1 year. We used models from Luthern social services in Vermont and another in Fla. I think it is a good/great idea but alot more effort than 2 yrs.
