Because they are too young, or haven't been taught yet, how to communicate properly. They feel that whining will get them what you want. That's why you have to teach children how to ask for things politely, saying pelase and thank you, and that they cant ALWAYS get what they want. They whine the same as a newborn baby cries when it is hungry. They gotta grow out of that.

It's their job. Seriously, children have a difficult time expressing their feelings in words so they do it with actions. But some of it, no doubt, is the parents fault if they allow it to go on too long. Some whining is normal. Constant whining is spoiled.

The main reason kids whine is because they want something. If they can't get what they want, they'll whine for it. The reason it works on parents is because it's annoying like you said. Kids who whine are very smart. They whine so the parents get annoyed. As the parents get annoyed, they'll do anything for the whining to stop. To get the whining to stop they get the kids what they want. Make sense? It works.

I never whined as a kid, in fact I dont recall any of us five kids whining. Perhaps we were afraid we would be given something to whine about (like a good swift kick in the a**.)

what else are they going to do? they are the most powerless things on the planet.
they can't pick up and leave. they can't hit. they can't talk back (or shouldn't). they can't completely ignore you (though they try to a lot of the time). if it's about something they want, they can't buy it themselves most times.
it's a parent's responsibility not to give in. though the noise is annoying, the reasoning behind whining is actually pretty understandable. adults whine too when they feel powerless.

They feel it helps them get what they want. Sometimes it does. But for the record I run into many adults who whine like hell. Some adults even whine more than children.

Because they think they can get away with it. Give them a reason to whine. A sore butt is a valid reason to whine.

Younger children, say 5 & under, do it because they may not fully understand how to express themselves. Children older than that do it because they know there parents will give in and give them their way.
