In that price range I have to agree with the other posters who suggested the Springfield XD pistols. I am not a fan of the Sigma at all. The Ruger will prove to be a reliable pistol and most likely alway go bang, but the feel clunky and they often rattle. What's more most of them have only adaquate accuracy at best.
I think that some folk mistake the Tarus PT for a 1911 format pistol. According to what I'm seeing at Impact Guns, the PT is a double action only auto pistol.
One real advantage of the 9MM is that ammo is less expensive and I'd rather see you spend more money on practice ammo than on a high end gun. If you are new shooter then the lesser recoil of the 9MM verses the .40 or the .45 will better allow you to concentrate on the aspects of good marksmanship.
Good luck.

I would take the Taurus any day over the Sigma. If you are comparing the 709 Slim with a service size Sigma- then the size is very different. The 24/7 would be more near the Sigma style and size. The Taurus 24/7 is a much better gun than the Sigma. Actually all Taurus pistols have a better rep than Sigma. And, the triggers are better. If you look at the Taurus 909 and 911 (all metal frame), they also have an exposed hammer and a decocker safety. If you want a full size gun- look at the 92. If you want a very good all metal handgun, that is the best buy for the money- look at a Stoeger Cougar for $400. You will not find a better gun even for $200 more.

Holy crap!!! I can't believe the jack-offs who don't know what they are saying about guns!!! Thank goodness for the GOA and NRA!!!! Criminal loving, self-defense hating pansis!
Anyway, as surely you know Taurus has one of the best waranties if not THE best warranty in the firearm industry. The PT 1911 does have some nice features included in it's price, and I'm sure it's a great firearm, but can't be concrete on this since I've never owned one. But Taurus is a great company and they are very well known for having far lower priced items than the competion.
The Sigma, on the other hand, I have owned. I used it for a very short while as a full size back up at work. It's a nice weapon, light and the color contrasts make it look cool, (I owned the OD Green and Black version). It too had a few features, like the light rail and sights that came with it. It was an OK gun, squared and bit futuristic looking...I liked it. Smith & Wesson are an excellent company too, so their reputation is allways a good thing to have.
All in all, I would seriously consider the 1911 and hold them both for comparison. I, personally am leaning for the PT, but you gotta have that actual hold to feel how comfortable it is and how good the sights work. I would want to compare them side by side at the shop if I could. You never know, there might be a huge difference between the both you just couldn't tell the first time you saw them.

You have chosen more than a different caliber. A 1911 style pistol is a true classic and is very popular. The Sigma on the other hand is a new school polymer-framed pistol that has many followers. If you like the 1911 type the Taurus is a good example and would serve you well.As for the polymer pistols, the GLOCK,XD-Springfield,Taurus 24-7 all would be good choices.

Man these anti-gun liberal loonies need their heads examined..
Anyway out of those choices I'd go with the Taurus 10 rd .45.
Smith and Wesson makes good revolvers and the new M&p's are nice, but I've heard the Sigmas are junk from quite a few people.

I personally havent every shot either as i am a glock or Springfield XD fan myself, but when i was on patrol i carried a S & W 5906. It was a 9mm not a .40 or .45. I never had any problems with it. I have no beef with either. My suggestion would be to go to a firing range and rent both pistols (if they do rentals there). Shoot a lot of rounds out of both and see what works for you. If you cant rent firearms at a range around you then go shopping, hold each gun and see what feels best in your hand. I would also check out forums online and read what people have posted about the gun. checkout sites like www.ar15.com and such. Good luck with the purchase.

First I need to respond the liberal, narrow minded people who have posted that gun ownership and conceal carry should be banned or illegal. You should be damn pround to live in a coutry that believes in your individual rights to own a firearm. Countries without these rights have significatly higher crime rates (Take a look at Australia's new gun laws and how that's going. Crime is up 38% since guns were taken from law abiding citizes.) Now I own a Taurus personally and have sold both types of guns you are considering. Personally for the money the Taurus is more bang for the buck. The only draw back can be accessories for the Taurus PT line. The trigger sucks and there's nothing you can do about it. It's one of the safety measures on these guns. Taurus is also really good about standing behind their lifetime warranty.

Neither one.
If you're gonna drop that kind of coin, might as well spend a little more and get the BEST and buy yourself a H-K USP .45. It's my carry piece of choice and I wouldn't trade it for the almighty Glock or anything else, even with cash on the side. I've run over 1000 rounds of all types of ammo, form SWC lead to JHC and frag rounds through mine without a single malfunction of ANY sort.

As for the gun haters look people kill people not guns. Your one of those idiots who will be robbed and nothin you can do but stand there. From my life exp, The fast food store i was in got robbed wile i stood in line. There was four employ es and a woman with her child. And me thank god the two that robbed that store didnt kill us all. They both had what looked like semi-autos with suppressors on them. Needless to say i made it out and wont go back with out a 45cal. to stick in there face and go bang IF SHOT AT SHOOT BACK thank god ive got my 45 with me thnx STOMPIN

I would suggest you ditch both of those and check out Springfield Armory's line of XD pistols. In my experience they are the most reliable and accurate handguns made. I have a 9mm and plan on getting a 45 ACP soon. I've gone target shooting w/different buddies that are always shooting different pistols and each time they are ready to chunk theirs in the river by the time we are through. I don't own stock yet but I will be working on that soon...Happy Plinking...
