They are hotlines for people who are depressed or who cut themselves, and quite simply put, they are a place where you can call if you are feeling like you are in crisis.

They do not provide counselling, but do offer an empathetic and listening ear for when you are in crisis - in hopes that you will reach out and avoid any harmful behaviour. They will also try to link you up with resources in your area ... ie. provide you with phone numbers, etc.

Here are some numbers I found in the San Jose area. If you call the wrong one for your needs, they should help you find the right one. Start with one, tell them your problem, and ask if you've called the right place. Good luck.

They are there to give people an outlet for their pain in hopes that they do not turn it inward and begin cutting to relieve it. They know that a lot of depressed people cannot talk to anyone about how they feel for whatever reason. Sometimes it's easier to talk to a stranger over the phone. A lot of the people that answer the phones there are well trained in that field or had once been depressed, suicidal or cutters themselves. They know how it feels and they know there is a way out. They can't cure anyone but they can help in a crisis situation.
