I'm a 36 y/o, healthy male in decent shape who "threw out" his back (and simulatenously bruised my ego) while playing with my toddler this morning. The spasm was so bad that I was practically imobilized. Advil and Valium helped, as did my electric heating pad, but I was wondering if anyone else had alternative solutions (preferably non-Rx, as I'm not a big fan of Flexoril, Vicodin, etc).

Thanks!

Dan

Try alternating heat for twenty minutes . Then nothing for twenty minutes and follow with an ice pack for fifteen minutes. the heat will relax the spasm and the ice will help take down the inflammation. If you can get to a chiropractor on Monday you probably would get the best natural help for your back. Nothing works quite as effective as chiropractic for back problems.

I've enclosed a link where you can look for a chiropractor in your area that uses the activator method. This is the least invasive method of treatment.

Make a rice sock, the heat will be deep penetrating which is what you need. Sounds like a muscle strain/sprain. Here's what you do.......Get a sock, tube socks work pretty good. Get some rice, white is fine/minute or otherwise. Measure about 4 cups and pour into sock. Tie a knot on the end, put in the microwave. Nuke about 2-3 minutes depending on your oven. Take out and place a towel or cloth between you and the rice sock, DO NOT PLACE THE SOCK BY ITSELF, SERIOUS BURNS COULD OCCUR. Rest for awhile, the sock can be reheated as needed. After several uses, you'll be able to smell that the rice is beginning to burn, so you would want to replace it at that time. Massage helps with spasms, those little three legged wooden items they sell in the health areas of stores, they work really good if you have someone willing to help out. Good luck.

Ibuprofen. That will help. Also go to the doctor, and have him or her perscribe some pain relief medication.
