The Eustachian tube can be blocked, or obstructed, for a variety of reasons. When that occurs, the middle ear pressure cannot be equalized. The air already there is absorbed and a vacuum occurs. sucking the eardrum inward and stretching it. Such an eardrum cannot vibrate naturally, so sounds are muffled or blocked, and the stretching can be,. If the tube remains blocked, fluid (like blood serum) will seep into the area from the membranes in an attempt to overcome the vacuum. This is called “fluid in the ear,” serous otitis or aero-otitis.

The most common cause for a blocked Eustachian tube is the common cold. Sinus infections and nasal allergies (hay fever, etc.) are also causes. A stuffy nose leads to stuffy ears because the swollen membranes block the opening of the Eustachian tube.

Children are especially vulnerable to blockages because their Eustachian tubes are narrower than in adults.
How To Unblock Your Ears
Swallowing activates the muscle that opens the Eustachian tube. You swallow more often when you chew gum or let mints melt in your mouth. These are good air travel practices, especially just before take-off and during descent. Yawning is even better. Avoid sleeping during descent, because you may not be swallowing often enough to keep up with the pressure changes. (The flight attendant will be happy to awaken you just before descent.)

If yawning and swallowing are not effective, unblock your ears as follows:

Step 1: Pinch your nostrils shut.
Step 2: Take a mouthful of air.
Step 3: Using your cheek and throat muscles, force the air into the back of your nose as if you were trying to blow your thumb and fingers off your nostrils.

When you hear a loud pop in your ears, you have succeeded. You may have to repeat this several times during descent.

What About Decongestants and Nose Sprays?
Many experienced air travelers use a decongestant pill or nasal spray an hour or so before descent. This will shrink the membranes and help the ears pop more easily. Travelers with allergy problems should take their medication at the beginning of the flight for the same reason.

Decongestant tablets and sprays can be purchased without a prescription. However, they should be avoided by people with heart disease, high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms, thyroid disease, or excessive nervousness. Such people should consult their physicians before using these medicines. j Pregnant women should likewise consult their physician first.

If Your Ears Will Not Unblock
Even after landing you can continue the pressure equalizing techniques, and you may find decongestants and nasal sprays to be helpful. (However, avoid making a habit of nasal sprays. After a few days, they may cause more congestion than they relieve.) If your ears fail to open, or if pain persists, you will need to seek the help of a physician who has experience in the care of ear disorders. He/she may need to release the pressure or fluid with a small incision in the ear drum.

DO NOT plug your nose and blow! If you're congested, your eustachian tube (the tube between your nose and ear to equalize internal and external pressure) is clogged. You won't be able to pop your ears, and adding additional pressure will rupture your ear drum. Exruciating pain means you've done it already. A ruptured ear drum will heal on it's own in about a week or two, but it's a good idea to go to the doctor to get an antibiotic to prevent infection to the wide open ear while waiting for it to heal.

Sounds like you could have an ear or sinus infection. Have your folks take you to your doctor. You might need anti-biotic and ear drops to numb the pain. Don't put anything in your ear. Not even your finger, as that could aggravate it further. If you are congested as well it is definitely something you should talk to your doc with. I hope you feel better. Drink plenty of water and take an allergy medicine. It will help unclog your sinuses and alleviate some of the pressure in your ear at least until you see your doctor.

Swallowing also helps. If you are congested you should try taking Sudafed and Ibuprofen together. Sudafed is a decongestant and Ibuprofen is an anti inflammatory. It works well together to open you up and let your ears clear. The pressure that you are having is being caused from your sinus being inflamed and swollen. I use this method whenever I have a head cold to clear my ears. A hot shower can also help in opening up you sinuses.

Well, I hate that to; I have the same things happening to me to. But I have a special type of earplug for planes that work. They are purple. But if you aren't willing to pay and search in stores, you can do this idea too. But don't grind your teeth that will hurt the next day or so. You should have your index finger and pointer and whenever you are about to land have those two fingers and plug your ears with them. It helped me one day. It might work I am not sure if it will work for you. I hope it does.

all you have to do is open your mouth as if to yawn and it will pop it a little but it probably won't help try blowing your nose for the conjestion. or put A LITTLE BIT of hydrogen poroxide in in with a q-tip and tip your head to the oppisite side of the irritating ear.
Try not to eat too much sugar too, because your probably sick the sugar won't help the ears!
