its your starter you need a new one. because the gear in the starter that mates against your flywheel goes in and out so it doesnt burn up the starter really fast so its probably getting stuck and not setting on the flywheel properly so its hitting a couple teeth on the flywheel and grinding. also i just realized you might have a bad crankshaft sensor which could cause this as well because the crank and the flywheel are attached and if the sensors bad the crank will be slightly off which could be whey your starter doesnt line up correctly. but its a toss up with that one. i guess youll see when your mechanic looks at it.

I,m thinking that the grinding noise that you are referring to is the starter drive not meshing completely with the ring gear on your flywheel (manual) or flex-plate (automatic).
A new starter may well remedy this situation, unless the damage is to far gone from repeated grinds.
Have your mechanic inspect the ring gear while the starter is out.
The bad news is that if the damage is severe to the ring gear it will need to be replaced which involves removal of the transmission, and a new flex-plate or ring gear installed onto the flywheel (sorry)

Could be the starter going bad. Thing called a bendix gear possibly sticking, or the solenoid isn't doing like it should. Good luck.
