The answer is "mostly". The liver is in the top right hand side of the abdomen. Most of it is behind the lowest ribs in the front. But not all of it. Also, when you take a really deep breath, your diaphragm pushes down on the liver lowering it farther below the ribs. And if there is any swelling of the liver from disease (hepatitis, cirrhosis, etc) then it will extend further below the protection of the ribs. Next to the spleen, the liver is the second most injured organ in the abdominal cavity from trauma.
