I have a very hard time falling asleep, I go to bed at 10 pm but cant get to sleep until 2 am, this doesnt work well when I have to get up at 6 am. I am always tired and I do not get good sleeps, ever. I just want to pass out so bad. It's taking a toll on my life, I never used to be like this but the past 2-3 months have just been a nightmare. Does anyone have any tips they use to fall asleep quickly, or any pills that would work. I'll try anything.

There are several medications that can help. Over the counter you can get Tylenol pm or Benadryl which you take an hour before you go to bed. If you need something prescribed by a doctor you can try Lorazapin, Atavan, or Ambian. They all work great and have no side affects. However you can only get them from your doctor. I used Ambian for a few weeks until I got myself on the right sleep pattern.

I also soak in a hot bath right before bed and I have a cup of hot tea which makes me sleepy.

Contrary to people's suggestions to take drugs, my first recommendation is to not... this should always be your last resort.

You have to examine your sleeping habits and why it is that you are having a hard time sleeping.

Definitely take a look at your sleeping routine - do you go to bed at the same time, is it quiet when you go to bed, are you avoiding caffeine before bedtime, do you avoid strenuous activity?

Try a variety of things before resorting to medications - hot baths, relaxation exercises, meditation ... listening to relaxing music, herbal teas, melatonin... the natural stuff.

If you're still having difficulty sleeping, then go and speak to your doctor. While access to over the counter medications may allow you sleep in the short term, in the long run you could be creating all sorts of difficulties for yourself. When you see your doctor, he or she might work with you to rule out any physical reasons for your inability to sleep. From there, you can work on whether there might be a pharmaceutical (temporary fix) to your problem that could include over the counter remedies.

I have the same problem, and I end up having to nap during the day sometimes between school and work.... and that just makes it worse. When I go to the gym before bed that works for me, but apparently it can do the opposite as well.

You need to discuss this with your doctor, there are several conditions that make it difficult to sleep. First your family physician can help you with the normal stuff, then you can go to a special sleep clinic where they specialize in finding sleep problems.
