According to the Cambridge Companion to Atheism—edited by Michael Martin, Cambridge University Press: Cambridge, UK (2005), from 3 to 9 percent of the U.S. population falls into the category of atheists, agnostics and nonbelievers in a god. It’s a modest percentage compared to most modern states (even at the high end) but still amounts to a sizable number of people, from almost 9 million to almost 27 million individuals.
For the year 2000, David B. Barrett (Encyclopedia Britannica and World Christian Encyclopedia, 2001) classified 150,089,508 (2.5% of world's population) as atheists, and 768,158,954 people as "Nonreligious" (12.7% of the world) for a total of 918,248,462 (15.2% of the world). These calculations by Barrett include all agnostics and others in our "Secular/Nonreligious/Agnostic/Atheist" category. Our figure of 1.1 billion in this category is considerably higher, and takes into consideration Zuckerman's analysis as well. Of the people in this grouping, it is estimated that 40 to 50% have a stated traditionally "theistic" belief in God, deities or a Higher Power.
God Bless You

Though I cannot give you specific statistics, I know that non-Christians make up far more of the world's population than Christians do. There are a lot of atheists & agnostics in Europe, and it might be interesting to point out how much lower their rates of rape and hate crimes are than in America. They aren't so uptight, in other words, and allow each other to simply live their own lives.
I think things will crack at some point and there will be a war between Christians and the rest of the world. Bush already started it.

The question is sweet one, and one which many will answer otherwise. My ideas are that you've positioned all religions into one basket and that i don't sense that you'll extremely do this. I also do not imagine you could characteristic peoples wealth to faith. you assert that the poorer international places are more desirable non secular than richer ones that are not so non secular. ought to or not it is that because they're adverse international places, the individuals go with some thing to position self assurance in? Why no longer a god or goddess ... or a mess of them? in case you've faith that the progression of the human race would properly be summed up in funds and cents then I even ought to disagree. The progression of the human race lies interior us as an entire and would not relax with faith. it is all to do with how we communicate with one yet another and manage one yet another. If shall we only all get alongside, then humanity ought to progression only fantastic.

I heard recently that atheists are at 5% in the U.S., which is insane to me, since almost everyone I know is Atheist.

The percentage is much higher in European countries than in the US. Remember, we got stuck with the religious zealots as "founding" our country... thanks Europe... hehe.
