It's supposed to only take a couple weeks. I had twin grandsons born on 12/18/05, and their numbers came in plenty of time for taxes. They were applied for in the hospital. If you have already applied and haven't gotten it yet, call your local social security office and ask them to help. If you haven't applied, do so right away.

Ask your local SS office. They can tell you how long it will take. If you didn't apply through the hospital it can take up to 12 weeks to receive the card and number. Applying through the hospital when you apply for the birth certificate is the fastest way to get a new baby's card & number.

if you go to the ss office with the birth certificate you can get a paper with proof of the ss number the day you walk in. it takes about 7 to 10 days to get a card through the mail

It usually doesn't even take 2 weeks. If you go to the SS office they can give you a piece of paper with the # as long as you give proper ID. Congrats on your new bundle of joy! Good luck!

I DON'T THINK YOU NEED A BABY'S SSN FOR THE FIRST YEAR. YOU CAN CHECK ON A WEB SITE OF YOU GOOGLE SSN'S. BUT I'M PRETTY SURE I DIDN'T HAVE ONE FOR MY DAUGHTER 2 YEARS AGO

It takes several weeks. However, if you go to your local social security office and show them the birth certificate, they will give you the number right then.
