This is simple math, nothing more. The confusion may come from the fact that there are actually different definitions of a "billion" depending where you are in the world. However, the population of the world that gives the answer 6.5 billion uses the U.S. definition of a billion, which means a 1000 million. If there are 6.5 billion people in the world, this equals 6,500 million. 5% of this is 325 million, which is a lot - close to the population of the United States.

If you can't figure out 5% of 6.5 billion, you have no business doing 'research' - at least, not any research anyone would be expected to pay attention to.

1 billion is 1,000,000,000; so 1% of 1 billion is 10,000,000
1% of 6,500,000,000 is 6.5 times 10,000,000 or 65,000,000
5% of 6,500,000,000 is (5 X 65,000,000) or 325,000,000

You could also do that in one step on a calculator - multiply 6,500,000,000 by 0.05; or divide it by 20.

A more interesting question is distribution - no disease would be expected to be evenly spread throughout the world. It must be more common in certain areas or groups of people than others, and that variation tells you something about the disease.

If you plan on writing a 'research paper' you may also want to brush up on your writing skills. I recommend "Sin Boldly" by David R. Williams.

An estimated 6,525,170,264, 1% of this is 65251702.46, multiply that by 5 and you have 326258513.2
So, 5% = roughly 326 million
