First of all ferrets are illegal in California & Hawaii. Keep this in mind if you ever want to take your ferret(s) on an excursion. Trust me being arrested for illegal posession and putting your loved critter(s) in mortal danger isn't worth it! If you are fortunate to live in any other state, well hooray! Ferrets are great pets. They are fun loving and never loose their playfullness (kinda like a kitten). As for the stinky factor that others will tell you about, most are sold descented and as long as you keep up on potty clean-up you can keep it to a bare minumum. On that note, potty training is the most difficult hurdle to overcome but it is not impossible (consult a book). Even though they sleep alot, ferrets also require companionship, if you can't be with your ferret enough, I recommend you buy them in pairs. Also, they are VERY curious creatures, you might have to childproof your cupboards, etc. and make sure they don't get out of the house on their own, they don't have the honing instincts of a cat or a dog. As far as cost goes, I think it depends on your location. Where I live they sell for ~ $125 (out of state of course). Vet care can be expensive if you live in CA. since many vet's will not see them & are not educated in their common ailments. It may seem like alot of responsibility but they are well worth it! If California would wise up I would love to care for them again. PS... I recomend a large cage (with multi-levels), a hammock to sleep in, and a CORNER litter box. PPS... they are nippers, it is often misinterrpreted as aggression but it is actually their form of playing (ferrets have tougher skin than we do). As cute as this is DO NOT encourage it. Just like a puppy they need to be trained not to press down so hard (not in an abusive manner of course).

In addition to what the others have said, you should know that a lot of ferrets end up in animal shelters. I think because they are more active than their adoptive families were prepared for. Also they can be very smelly, and should be shampooed (like dogs) to control the smell.

If you want to get a ferret, please consider adoption. In additon to doing a good deed, you benefit from adopting a mature animal. The shelter staff can tell you the individual personalities of the ferrets they have up for adoption. This lets you choose the one most suited to your family situation. Also, shelter volunteers have probably socialized the animals before putting them up for adoption. This means less training you have to go through.

They cost anywhere from $99 to $150. They are adorable little pack rats. They act alot like a kitten. You can play with them and use kitty toys like you would a kitten. Very playful, love to run around checking things out. Although they can be biters. Not all, but some more than others. They love to curl up inside blankets or hamacks to fall asleep. They really enjoy going into any little cubby or under furniture, drawers... whatever they can squeeze into. You keep them in a cage. You can train them to use a litter box like you would a cat. Definately an entertaining animal!!

Well, first off your looking at something that can vary in price. my ferret, Cujo, cost me 99$....he was on a deal type thing...so i got him, the cage (not a very big one) food dish, water bottle, litter box, litter, bedding and food all for 180$...i got a larger cage...that alone was 200$...so it all depends on where you go and how much you really plan on spending. you also need to make sure you have alot of time for the ferret....they are very active animals and LOVE to play...hope that helps just a little
