Yes they should ban it.

People should not talk on their cell phones while driving except in the case of an emergency. That's just plain common sense, even though people chit chat on them while driving all the time. I've also known of someone who was being followed by someone in another car, and when they picked up the cell phone it scared the stalker off.

Should it be banned? No. Should there be studies and an awareness campaign about how much it impairs driving? Yes!

Plus--we as consumers should be demanding of the cell phone manufacturers that the device can be converted to hands-free while driving. When this happens it will not be considered acceptable to be talking on a hand-held one and legislation would be unnecessary. Even though I personally do not use the cell while driving except in extroardinary circumstances (and even then I PULL OVER!) we all need to get better with this issue.

After reading another answer I am reminded of another issue. I page doctors for a living. Sometimes they are in their cars when they call back. Hopefully they are using hands-free, but when it involves a baby potentially dying I don't ask what kind of phone they are calling back on.

here in the uk it is now illegal to use your mobile/cell phone whilst driving unless you have a hands free kit or ear piece. some people think that is still not enough as it is just the conversation itself that causes the distraction not just holding the phone. it is more dangerous than just talking to someone sitting in the passenger seat next to you because someone talking to you on the other end of the phone has no awareness of the driving situation you might be in and does not know when to stop talking so you can concentrate. there have been a few cases recently in the uk of death by dangerous driving convictions by people texting whilst they are driving. how nutty are they!!!

There are those of us that have mastered the art of good driving and can use their cell phone while doing it as well as other things like talking to someone in the vehicle, drinking etc. I absolutely cannot stand drivers the very large number of drivers that obviously don't have enough focus or brain power to do both and this is a large problem. Don't blame the phones, blame the rude ignorant person for not being aware of their surroundings and how it affects others.

If you are on a hands free device go for it, if you're chatting away driving down the street holding your phone.. hang up!!!! Some places have banned cell phone use while driving unless a hands free device is in use, I think that should be in effect everywhere!

My motto is, unless you're trying to come up with a cure for AIDS, cancer, or some other horrible disease, hang up ! I also think it's rude to be talking on your cell phone when you are at a store and paying for something. The checker is a live person. How 'bout some interaction like maybe a "hi" ? Stupid, arrogant people.

Here in L.A. I believe that they just passed a law and soon it will be illegal to use hand held mobile phones while driving. I see many people using earphones with mics already and it hasn't seemed to help. I always get stuck behind somebody who is so busy talking that they haven't noticed the red light turned green and they don't hear me honking.

They don't think their driving is impaired! Of course, we see them weaving around, driving in the fast lane with 20 cars stacked up behind them, running into people with their grocery carts at the store while they are talking or letting their kids run wild while they are chatting, driving through school zones too fast while on their phones with THEIR own kids in the car, weaving in and out of traffic at high speed while on their phones.

Drunk drivers also don't think their driving is impaired!

Yeah right behind you!

I'm a bus driver in the UK and it really p*ss*s me off, I have seen male and female drivers on mobiles, turning corners and changing gears whilst their children are climbing all over the back seat or all over them.

Sometimes you just wish you were the LAW so you could pull them over and fine them or take the license of them.

I believe that there is a national speed limit for people talking on cell phones, which is 40 MPH. It does not matter if they are on the freeway or diving through a parking lot. It’s always 40 MPH.!!!

It is illegal in my state of New York. But why can drivers still put on makeup, curl eyelashes, read the paper, eat and drink, watch videos on their sun visor tv screen or any number of other things?
