and won't stop no matter how many times you tell him not to. Then once they are cracked and peeling he picks at the dead skin until they are raw!!! I am at my wits end with this. I have put blistex on him but he just licks it off. I give him plenty of liquids during they day so he is hydrated. Is this just a phase or am I missing something here? He is only 2 1/2 so explaning things to him just seems to go in one ear and out the other!! It hardly seem fair to punish him for this but I don't see any other options. Any ideas would be great.

Put Aquaphor on his lips. It's thicker than Vaseline, but feels the same. (It's got kind of a gross taste too.) It can be used to heal minor burns as well, and it works WONDERS on cracked lips.

Try putting it on him right after he falls asleep - he probably won't bother to lick it off then.

My daughter is currently doing this... she just turned 8. She got up this morning, and it looks like she has a mustache!! I have been sending her to school with chapstick to apply, putting neosporin and blistex on her at night to help heal it... and yet, she keeps licking! She hasn't been picking at the dead skin, but the skin still feels raw and stiff. No matter how many times I tell her to put on the chapstick or stop licking... she still does it! She does this every year... and every winter she ends up with a chapped-lip mustache! When I figure out how to get an eight-year-old to stop this, I'll let you know! : )

my daughter is 4, and just started doing this. They keep licking because it keeps getting dryer and dryer...its an endless cycle. I've tried blistex, but she just keeps licking it off! She has a mustache AND redness underneath her bottom lip! I think it really is a nervous habit, and they will grow out of it...even tho it looks horrible, I think the more you show attention to it, the more they will lick their lips!!

My daughter did the same thing so I ended up keeping cherry chap stick in my purse. She thinks she is so grown up putting "lipstick on" and her lips stay hydrated (when i think about it). Good Luck!!!!

Maybe try getting the Disney character chap stick and telling him that his favorite character also uses that chap stick. It worked for my daughter.

my son has this problem before and they said to use Aquafor.

Now he's getting it on the side of his mouth (not his lips) and I got a prescription
