Part of the answer involves where you live and the humidity in the air.or being near the ocean. The best procedure is to do what you're doing, wipe the exterior surface each time after handling. Fingerprints often contain moisture and acid, both can etch the finish of your weapon if left on the surface.

Some lubricates, like LPS, have rust inhibitors in them, this will greatly reduce the formation of rust for long periods of time.

For purely sporting purposes, a good blue finish is supreme. You might as well have a beautiful finish if you are going to pay a lot. For all others, I like oxide or parkerizing. I keep richly blued guns for target an dthey get stored with silica desicate, RemOil, and rifles are also in Remington silicon-impregnated socks. No rust problems there. Takes two seconds to wipe prints off of a gun. Relax.

I agree blued is more high maintenance. If you go to the sporting goods store you can find silicone impregnated cloth. Just lay it on top of your gun when you put it up and always keep it in the case. So every time you get the gun out the cloth is there and everytime you put it up the cloth is there. No biggie

You do need to wipe it off when it's touched as previously stated. You also should be aware of climate epsically if you carry it. A gun will sweat when taken in from a cold outdoors to a warm indoors. You also need to be aware that you should never store a gun in a gun case. If you have a climate controlled safe that should be fine but a case will lock any moisture in and expedite the rusting process. Guns are best stored where air can circulate around them.

If you touch it, you need to clean it, the oils in your hand plus the moister created from 2 deferent items at 2 different tempters coming in contact create a bad environment for steel.
It’s only high maintenance if you keep fondling it.
Don’t fondle it and you wont have to keep cleaning.
