He would have been considered to be an evangelical Christian, although he belonged to the state church in Germany. He spoke out against the indifference and lack of faith evident in the church, believed that where true faith exists, there will be a life that is lived for Christ. (He wrote the book "The Cost of Discipleship"). Apparently he knew of the plot to murder Hitler, ans because of that was arrested along with the plotters, and was eventually hanged in a concentration camp just before the end of World War II:

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was an amazing man. I believe he was Lutheran. He was one of the few Lutherans who raised his voice when the Nazi state started persecuting other religions and sects.

He is widely associated with a plot to murder Hitler, but there's no definitive proof that I know of.

The Nazi's executed him.
