On my FAFSA for 2006-2007 I was identified as a dependent. However I'm expecting a child in January and I read that I could change my dependency status to independent if I have a child during the academic year, is it possible to get a override and thus change my award package.

You can actually change it now. You're aloud to include children that you're expecting in the household. This would make you independant. Go on and change it now (before you give birth because I'm sure you'll have other things on your mind than filling out a FAFSA). You're most likely going to be selected for verification through your school which you'll have to provide a copy of your 1040 tax info, and a Independant Verification Worksheet. If they request this before you have your child, it'll ask for name, and age... just put "expected child" for name and the date when you are due.

I hope this helps, if you have any questions with verification, email me.

The question asks do you have children that you will be supporting at least 50% between July 1- June 30 so if you will be supporting that child then you should have answered yes to that question and would be dependent. If you will be living with your parents and they will be supporting both of you then no.

You must be providing, or in your case when the child is born be able to provide, 50% or more of the support for the child in order to be independent. If you have little or no income, you most likely are going to be selected for verification and have to provide documentation that you do provide 50% of the child's support.
