And if so can that doctor say what could cause blood in one's stool all of a sudden? The person was diagnosed with IBS long ago and received special meds for that but starting yesterday she noticed blood and not such a small amout as well as today. I am her friend and part time caregiver and she refuses at this point to go to the er. If anyone can help me with reasons for this I would appreciate it. Thank You.

Blood in the stool can be caused by hemorrhoids (tissue at the anus becomes inflamed) if the person is constipated or has difficult bowel movements. This can also be coming from the intestines, but first I would consider hemorrhoids. Try using Preparation H suppository to reduce the inflammation. If this does not help After a few days contact your medical doctor for an appointment.

Red blood would mean a tear or fissure of or near the anus. A serious internal bleeding would cause black-colored stool.
Remember, a very small amount of blood can look like a LOT when diluted in toilet water!
Keep an eye on it, and if it gets worse or doesn't stop in 2 days, insist she go to the ER.

If the blood is bright red, it's likely the result of hemorrhoids or some other injury to the lower colon. If it continues for longer than a couple of days or if it's heavy enough to cause concern for blood loss, she should go to the doctor. Actually, she should go to the doctor anyway but the E.R. may not be needed.

Hemmorrhoids, possibly. If it's red, it's not much to worry over. IBS can cause rectal bleeding, if she leans toward the constipation side of the syndrome. She may have an anal fissure, too. Increase fiber, drink, lots of fluids, and follow up with her doctor if the problem persists more than a week.

Its really hard to answer your question based on the information. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, perhaps may have exacerbated, however one can never tell without tests. Blood in the stool is never good, I would suggest a visit to her doctor, ASAP.

Constipation/straining/piles? If none of the above, then a visit to the GP would be in order, but not as an emergency
