What you said was good til the last thing where you said it was getting on your nerves. Thats what he is trying to do and you let him know he is succeeding. The best thing you can do is let it go and leave him to his misery alone. Just be happy and enjoy your life. You cant control other people.

No you were not bad or wrong in doing that, but I would have just ignored what he was saying since you don't even go to the same school. If peoples' opinions of you are based on false statements that came from your ex, they are stupid for even listening to him because that is completely biased. People need to open their mind and think, "Why is this person talking crap about their ex?" Obviously your ex has not moved on and is very immature in his actions. If he were mature, he would let people form their own opinions of you instead of forcing a preconceived idea of you into others' heads. He also is not very secure with himself if he has to spread rumors to make people not like you.

You have said your peace and got it off your chest. Now move on and let him go. If he talks more about you then you have to let it slide off your back and continue you life on your own. It will die as soon as he finds a new girl friend. It is part of learning how to handle unpleasant things in life. You did what you thought was best but each time you answer him it encourages him to be meaner. If it happens again, which it will, stop talking to him and let it go. If he feels you no longer care and he is not making you upset, and that is why he is doing it, he will soon stop. By answering him you have just encouraged him to say more. Look if you like to egg someone on but bothering them, and you get a reaction, it gives you courage and enjoyment to continue, even though they have asked you to stop. The more they protest the more you egg them on. Once you get now reaction from them the fun is over. Simple fact of life, in relationships of love.
Just the way it is.

You shouldn't have reacted in any way...ignoring him is the worse thing from your part that he could have had.
