For the most part your dog will most likely know what to do when it comes time for her to deliver her pups, but it would be extremely foolish for you to not be there when it happens. Even though dogs have been birthing pups for hundreds of years in the wild...they aren't in the wild nor have they been for quite some time.

As a breeder I have seen many many complications in many different breeds. A lot of times a dog will only produce one or two pups their first litter, this causes the pups to be much bigger because of the abundance of nutrition from the mother not being spred out through a big litter. The mother may not always be able to pass a puppy this big resulting in help from their human companions.

I have seen mothers and pups die because the breeder wasn't there to help in the whelping (birth). Pups can get stuck in the birth canal, they can die from suffocation due to the sac not being completely cleaned from their face. Some pups are born with too much fluid in their lungs and drown because a human wasn't there to help get the fluids out. The mother can damage the skin on the puppy's stomach while tearing the amilical cord. Some mothers may not have strong enough contractions to get the pups out, resulting in a C-section. If someone is not there to help when a puppy gets stuck in the birth canal it can kill the entire litter as well as the mother. The mother can feel stressed and take it out on the pups killing the entire litter.

There are just way too many complications and things that can go wrong to leave her there by herself. Please make sure you are there. If you can't be there take her to the vet while she is in labor and let them take care of her during whelping. You should only breed your dog if you can be there to take care of her for at least a week after her pups are born, especially a new mother.

My dog went into labor friday at 4am I was a nervous wreck, I came home early from work and still no pups, I paced up and down until midnight and after I went to bed she had them on her own. She was probably waiting for me to go away. lol. I got up at 4 and she had 7 of them and this was her first (and last)!! I didnt think she would know what to do but she did it all on her own. Shes an aussie mix. But still its a good idea to have someone around just in case. Good luck!!!!!!

Depending on the type of dog, you never know how well they will do during labor. For example, i have a pug and she isnt able to have her puppies without help. We had to help her cut the umbilical cords. But if you have a type of dog with a long snout, they should be okay. But i would do more research or ask a vet just in case.

You need to have a vet on call. She might end up needing a c-section or something can go wrong with the puppies. Take her to the vet to get him to tell you aobut when the puppies are due. You allso need to check on her when she is going to get close to her due date. My moms papillon gabby had to have an emergency c-section because her puppies were to big but on the otherhand her pappy Ewok was trying to have her puppy naturally in the closet. Her puppy had to be taken to the vet asap because when cleaning her ewok accidently nicked her forehead and took a chunck of skin off. You never know what can happen.

No! No! and No! Take your dog to the vet a.s.a.p. when puppies are born they have stuff in their nose's , which can not be taken out unless by a vet! If they stuff isn't cleared they puppies Will suffocate. And your dog has to be under medicines that vet's carry to deliver! If you can't keep the puppies give them away or sell them to petco or pets smart.... but whatever you do take your dogs to the vet!

Your dog will know what to do when the time comes to deliver the puppies and as long as there are no complications, she should be fine. You didn't state how old your dog is and since this is her first litter she may not know how to take care of them once they are delivered. You should try to make sure someone is around when she gets closer to her time.

There shouldn't be a problem but that doesn't mean there wont be, you should ask a neighbor or family member to drop in occasionally when it nears her time that way if anything goes wrong they should be near by to call your parents...as for the making of the baby dogs...it is quite normal for a dog to get "stuck" even more so if it was your dogs first encounter with a male...it is called a "tie" and it is natural. As is giving birth, dogs will do it on their own, unless there are unforeseen problems somebody should be there, and if they can't be you should think about hiring somebody to spend the days with her in the last few days.

She will know what to do. I have always been with my dogs when they gave birth because its an exciting experience. But my girls always did everything themselves. She will be fine. But if you are worried about her you could stay home or one of your parents could. Don't worry, just keep her vet check-ups regular and everything will be fine. Good luck with them!!

Gee..THAT is something you worry about BEFORE becoming a BYB!!!!!! Hope there are no complications, or the poor dog will pay for it. Sad. Spaying would have saved all the worry.
