Hollywood, contrary to popular belief--is not expensive like Beverly Hills, Malibu, etc.. It's actually cheaper than many parts of L.A. And it's not as glamorous as the media makes it.
If you do visit Hollywood, much of it is run-down and filled with prostitutes and tattoo parlors.

Read this article>>http://www.seeing-stars.com/Live/BeverlyHills.shtml

Here's what the article says:

>Many visitors come to Hollywood expecting to find a gleaming city filled with movie stars, posh restaurants, grand mansions and expensive shopping areas. They are, of course, very disappointed; the actual suburb of Hollywood is far from glamorous. The real "Hollywood" is a state of mind, not a place; it's not so much a city as it is shorthand for the general movie and entertainment industry.

....And celebrities who *do* live in Hollywood do not live in the actual city area of Hollywood---they live in the Hollywood Hills.

The median residential property value of a house in Hollywood is probably no more than $500,000 and that's not pricey compared to the 1.2 million + in other areas.

You can live on a lot less than $2000/month in L.A. Rents are fairly cheap in places like east Hollywood, and when lots of people share an apartment (whether they be punk rock kids or immigrant workers), the cost for each person is very low indeed. Public transportation costs almost nothing (MTA has $3 day passes and even cheaper monthly passes) and will take you anywhere in the city. Uities are more reasonable than anywhere else in California. Food depends entirely on what you eat, but doesn't cost any more than in the Midwest.

They are either sponging off their parents or living with a bunch of their friends in a bad part of town.
