You can't cure or prevent cold sores, but you can take steps to reduce how often they occur and shorten the length of an outbreak.
Cold sores often clear up without treatment in 7 to 10 days. Early treatment during the initial tingling or burning stage may stop the blister from forming, or help the cold sore heal faster once it has formed. It's good to know that there are certain non-prescription and prescription products that can help, including Abreva, Lipactin, Zovirax, Denavir and Valtrex.
You can take steps to guard against cold sores - to prevent them from occurring and to prevent the virus from being passed to other parts of your body or to other persons:
Use a lip moisturizer regularly to prevent your lips from becoming dry or chapped.
Try to avoid cold sore triggers such as stress or overexposure to the sun.
Limit your exposure to the sun or UV lamps, and always use a sunscreen lip balm with an SPF of at least 15.
During times of high stress, consider trying relaxation therapy.
Keep your immune system strong by maintaining a healthy diet and getting enough sleep.
Avoid kissing and skin contact with people, especially children, while blisters are present.
Avoid sharing food, cups/glasses/cans, utensils and towels when blisters are present.
Keep your hands clean - wash them frequently to avoid passing on the virus or infecting other areas of your body.
My friend swears by Zinc oxide/glycine cream for the treatment of cold sores and says it shortens the length of the outbreak by a couple of days.

I REALLY wanted you to know that you can EASILY never have to deal with another horrible, awful, nasty cold-sore for the rest of your life!!
I got them every winter my whole life until 3 years ago (I'm 36 now) and they were the BANE of my existence...the whole process took weeks to heal and would leave a scar for at least 2 months sometimes!
I was reading a message board on www.curezone.org and discovered the PERFECT remedy for both healing them and preventing them completely:
OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT
http://curezone.com/foods/oliveleaf.html
So, I buy the liquid tincture by "HerbPharm" and it has not failed me ONCE...Whenever I'm feeling drained, tired, stressed, or get that tingly feeling on my lip, I just load up on this stuff.
This is the one I buy: http://www.myvitanet.com/olleafex1ozh.html
You can also get Olive Leaf at Whole Foods Market, and other natural food stores.
Very cheap.
The first time I tried it, I was actually halfway into a major eruption and I drank a bunch of the extract in some water.
AS I WAS DRINKING the stuff down, I could feel the swelling on my lip shrinking...I was in such shock--I ran to the mirror--it was shrinking before my eyes and within ten minutes my lip had returned to NORMAL...I began kissing the bottle of Olive Leaf...yeah, I really did!!
I had tried everything in the past...I can't begin to tell you the WARS I had with these evil sores!
Well, I can finally say: I WON !!!

genuinely a chilly sore. i'm getting all of them the time and they offer the effect of being precisely the way you describe them. many times, a chilly sore comes from a deficiency in such issues as nutrition c and zinc. What I do to heal them is locate Carmex on the sore quite a few cases an afternoon. Carmex consists of camphor, it is totally good in healing chilly sores. also, take some zinc and nutrition C supplementations, alongside with the herb Echinacea. All of those may help heal a chilly sore immediately.

DO NOT POP IT !!! Same as a blister, leave it whole. Living in the desert I learned about Carmex. It works better than anything else I've heard of to date for anything from cold sores to chapped lips.
