These are very different breeds of dogs. I guess I would have to ask what made you decide on these two specific breeds?
If they are just two breeds that you love, then do some research on each and find the one that fits best with your lifestyle. The doberman will need lots of room and lots of exercise. Are you in a position to provide that?
When we first decided to get a puppy, I was dead set on the Dogue de Bordeaux. It was the only puppy I would look at. But as I researched further, I found that it really wasn't practical for my lifestyle. I ended up with an American Bulldog and we're living happily ever after.
I found this site extremely helpful when comparing breeds. Hope it helps you too. http://www.wonderpuppy.net/choose.htm

if you are not the active type, i would go with the cocker spaniel. it's conveniently-sized and needs moderate excercise unlike the doberman pinscher. it is also calm around strangers and other dogs which i am personally a fan of since i have grown up around the loudest dogs ever! but if you are active, i would suggest the doberman pinscher. it has a short coat making it easy to deal with. and it does not have the same odors as the cocker spaniel. if i was you i would go for the doberman pinscher because i am an active person and my grandma had a cocker spaniel...it seriously had some odor problems and was extremely lazy.

I love both, but think of your circumstances. If you don't mind alot of hair, get the cocker. Doberman Pinschers are hyper, and love to tear things down. If you live in an apartment, try getting a cocker with less hair. If you live in a house, you could get a doberman pinschers, and keep it out back. But, I personally like cockers better. :)

I LOVE DOBERMANS!!!!!
PROS: loyal, affectionate(called Velcro dogs), Typically great with kids if well socialized, great protectors, easy grooming, athletic but not overly active like a lab, smart and easily trainable,
CONS: domineering(you MUST be capable of establishing that YOU are in charge), require alot of exercise, smart (they NEED to have their minds stimulated or they could become destructive or aggressive. Also because they are so smart, they are more likely to test your limits). Because they were BRED for personal protection, they are highly reactive dogs. I would tell the kids not to startle him or leave them unsupervised (but this goes with ANY breed)
Dobies are my breed of choice but are not for everyone, as for being great family dogs, they ARE, in the right hands. I have even known dogs who "adopt" young children and treat them as their own, worry about them when their outside alone, etc...
Personally, I dont like cockers, I have only met one really sweet one. The rest were either viscious or just had NO personality. Also Cocker spanials are the breed most likely to bite. This is because of "Lady and the Tramp". Everyone wanted one. So they were over bred by people who had NO idea what they were doing, thus the aggressiveness.
Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

Wow! Those are two very different breeds!
It's just a matter of what you want from a dog. If you are looking for a large, protective dog, with extensive exercise requirements, go for the doberman. If you want a smaller, yet still protective dog with less extensive exercise requirements, then get the cocker.

It depends on your lifestyle. It's very important people are paired up with a dog that fits in with their lifestyle. MANY people just buy or adopt a dog of a breed they think they might like and then end up getting rid of them. Thats where most of the shelter dogs come from.

it depends on how much time you can spend on the dog coat care. a cocker takes a lot of grooming to keep them looking good. it also depends on how much space and room you have for a dog.
