Really! What is the big deal with launching hazardous materials, like radioactive waste or other extremely dangerous wastes, deep into space? Really! Are we afraid of killing innocent aliens or changing the universe? We are part of the universe and what ever we do was just meant to happen. Are the neighboring aliens going to decide to attack if we shoot waste into space?

I can see several drawbacks.

1. Cost - extremely expensive.
2. Possible launchpad or early flight accident.
3. Chance of debris entering Earth orbit and eventually coming down.
4. Lack of faith in the Frontier Ethic which holds that space can absorb whatever abuse we can manage to inflict on it and that the universe is there for us to use. The Frontier Ethic has not served us well in the past, and I have no evidence that leads me to believe that will change anytime soon. Just because we can't imagine the consequences yet doesn't mean there won't be any.

It's all about money my friend. Do you have any idea how expensive it is to fly heavy plutonium rods and glass logs of radioactive waste up out of the earth's atmosphere and into space?

Also, if you don;t get it out of earth's orbit, who's to say that it won;t re-enter and start raining radioactive waste back onto the planet?

Otherwise, it would be a terrific way to get rid of it!

Before you get totally discouraged, the world still uses the oceans as a major dumping ground. That ought to cheer you up a little.
