Is it impossible to get a cab in New York City?

It's not difficult at all, just stick your hand out and make sure you're not hiding away. Usually, when they don't stop, they're just being a jerk. Also, it depends on what area you're in.

It depends on the time of day and the weather. Bad weather = harder to get. I personally suggest taking the subway when it's light outside, and cabs once it gets past like 8 or 9 in the evening. You shouldn't have such a hard time finding cabs around then, unless you're in the theatre district at around 11 or 12, because that's when the shows let out, and it can take forever to get a cab then.

I almost never have a problem. The worst for me is on a Friday or Saturday night in a neighborhood that's known for nightlife, like the East Village. Everyone is trying to get a cab and all the ones that drive by are full. I've had some problems between midnight and 4am because everyone is drunk and wants to take a cab. When they find out I'm going to Brooklyn, they freak out and refuse to take me sometimes because they don't want to leave Manhattan on a busy cab night. They aren't allowed to refuse but they do it anyway sometimes.

I would say for the most part no...

if your downtown and its pretty late like after 12 its gets kinda hard, but not really.

It's not. Just stand there with your arm out and wait. They will come eventually. Make sure you are on a major avenue as well (9th Avenue, 5th Avenue, Broadway) -- they will come, trust me.
